January playlist: fresh tracks

Been a little while since I’ve done a playlist!  What better way to spend the $10 iTunes gift card that I got in my stocking on Christmas?  Eight new (to me, anyway) songs to power though a quick winter workout:

1) Rolling In The Deep – Adele: I love this song and its bluegrassy-pop fusion-ness.  Potential for overplayment: high.  But for now I’ll enjoy it!  [listen]

2) That’s All She Wrote – T.I. feat. Eminem: Great beat, perfect amount of Eminem anger. [listen]

3) Right Through Me – Nicki Minaj: I sort of love this chick.  In spite of her ridiculous hair.  Besides, I’m a sucker for songs in 3/4 time. [listen]

4) F**ck You – Cee Lo Green: This song is infectious without being annoying – truly a pop music miracle.  Opt for the clean “Forget You” version – which is just as good – if constant F-bombing offends you. [listen – dirty] [listen – clean]

5) Loca – Shakira: True story – When I’m running with Shakira in my earbuds, I fantasize about my alternate life as a sexy latin dancer.  (Hey, it could happen.) [listen]

6) Stereo Love – Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina: 75% generic dance beats, 25% Russian-sounding accordion refrain that is actually pretty rad. [listen]

7) Cameras – Matt & Kim: A song that is bound to end up as the backtrack of a UPS commercial or something like that, but fun nonetheless! [listen]

8) All of the Lights – Kanye West ft. Drake and Rihanna: Yes, it’s Kanye and he’s a douche.  But I like running to hip-hop and struggle to find songs that aren’t so overplayed that they make my ears bleed.  This one isn’t.  (Yet.)  [listen]

Not the most cleverly themed or creative playlist, but it’s nice to get some new blood flowing through the iPod once in a while!

Today’s EAT: When I lived in NYC, I used to write a lot more about restaurant food.  Now, I write less…because, sadly, I eat out less.  But also because I’m not sure how many Raleigh people there are actually reading this?  (Are you there, Raleigh people?  If so, please let me know!)

Anyway, on the off chance that I am reaching some locals, I have to share my favorite new lunch discovery:

Sono is a rather fancypants downtown sushi place, but their lunch special is a great deal.  Big thing of miso soup, big salad and any roll for $10.  (The rolls alone are usually $12+, and they’re pretty big!)  My Tuna Ecstasy roll was piled high with fresh chunks of spicy tuna tartare.  It was wonderful, and a nice break from the normal leftovers or PB&J that I make myself for lunch.

Today’s DRINK: Nothin’.  I wanted a beer when I got back from running tonight, but nothing in the fridge sounded good. I settled for water.  Yawn.

Today’s RUN: I must apologize to anyone who follows me on Twitter for my mini-tantrum this afternoon.  I did NOT want to go running.  I whined about it for a solid 90 minutes.  It was pretty pathetic.  Sorry.

And it was a crappy run.  I dragged myself through five sloggy miles.  And hated every one of them.

Oh well.  It happens.  Sometimes easy runs are hard.  Sometimes hard runs are easy.  Running can be weird and irrational like that.

Today’s QUESTION: What new song are you enjoying right now? I actually tend to enjoy most top-40-type music when it first comes out, but holy hell.  That shit goes from fun to overplayed SO quickly.

  1. Hooray for new songs! Dumb question-how do you get the pic of your playlist like that? I’ve tried and can’t do it. I just bought a bunch of stuff on itunes from stuff that I liked on Pandora but I’m forever on the hunt for more music. I’m currently obsessed with Percolator (oldie but goodie)

    • I just do a screenshoot and then crop it – pretty low tech. 🙂 I use Screencast/Jing which is free: http://www.techsmith.com/jing/

I *wish* iTunes had a widget feature! So annoying. They have iMix but you have to submit it and wait to get it approved. Too much work.

I’d like to start doing all of my playlists on Grooveshark, which has an awesome widget that you can embed, so people can play the song with one click from your post, but I can’t always find all of the songs I want on Grooveshark.

      #whitegirlproblems 🙂

  2. There’s some new country song that I’ve only heard a few times that I love. (maybe simply because it’s not overplayed yet). Guess that’s not a very helpful comment cuz I can’t remember what it’s called or who sings it. I Aldo have a lot of Shakira on various running playlists; my favorite is a super old song called “Si Te Vas”

  3. Agreed about loving a song and then being SO over it too quickly. I’m pretty much like that with anything that Taylor Swift puts out now.

A song that I am LOVING lately is “Grenade” from Bruno Mars. I just love the beat and the music.

  4. Yay, Kanye! I bought his album for $.99 and LOVE it. My personal favorite, sort of, is “Blame Game.” Or really, the last two minutes of it. It’s a monologue by Chris Rock and literally the funniest, filthiest thing I’ve heard in a while. I’m blanking on actual favorite new songs, but that is a worthwhile listen.

  5. I’m a semi-local reader!! I live in Sanford which is southwest of Raleigh off US-1.
I have the corny Glee version of Forget You and love to run to it!

  6. I’m a Raleigh girl!! Let me know what type of food you are interested in & I can possibly send you a couple of suggestions!

  7. Haha I enjoyed your whining and complaining yesterday. It was amusing.

  8. I need to make a new playlist.

I have days where I really, really don’t want to run. Those days suck!

  9. Love #4, 5, and 6!!

Right now my songs are “Firework” by Katy Perry and “We R Who We R” by Ke$ha.

  10. I still need a little Lady Gaga to get me through the tough spots.
To do this weekend: get new ipod 🙂

  11. I have “Cameras” on my play list right now, too. I can totally see it on some commercial. I will be sad. I must have missed the twitter whine, but I am sure the same thoughts were running in my head about my date with the treadmill all afternoon, too.

  12. I was just on iTunes before checking your blog, spending gift cards like crazy. I bought more than one Kanye song and kind of hate myself for it, but when I get to the gym I’ll be grateful. Also, very into Scissor Sisters right now and some old school hip hop (Sugar Hill Gang, anyone?)….

For a Friday afternoon treat, I suggest you google “Josh Groban sings Kanye’s Tweets”, a skit from the Jimmy Kimmel show. So freakin hilarious.

  13. I may live under a rock musically, but it helps to know that I’m not the only one with an alternate life in Latin dancing. You are so correct about this. A Shakira song came on and I had to fight against the urge to throw in some salsa moves on the elliptical.

  14. I am living under a rock and just discovered Mumford and Sons (album: Sigh No More). It’s not running music, it’s just pretty damn amazing music.

I’m also loving Pink’s Raise Your Glass and secretly think it should be the next gay anthem. I’m over Katy Perry.

  15. I am OBSESSED With Nicki Minaj’s “right thru me” song. If you watch the video, you’ll see she made an exception and decided to have normal hair in it!

  16. why i cant post comment here

  17. I’m a Raleigh person! We have lots of great local places – I’d be happy to give you some suggestions!

  18. Hi, I’m a Raleigh reader! If you’re a sushi fan – check out Waraji.

  19. Nicki Minaj is completely devoid of talent and is the biggest primadonna cunt I’ve ever met.

Cee-Lo is awesome. Truly a funny funny guy.
