I miss NYC

You simply cannot get the good stuff down south.

I’m back from the shortest New York weekend ever.  On Friday afternoon, I hopped a quick flight from RDU to JFK, made my way to the UES to pick up my race bib from NYRR, and then met up with Sarah.  We had some time to kill so we practiced our duck face.

Practice makes perfect!

After hooking up with Megan, we got down to business with a little runner-style sleepover.  We ate pizza, laid out our race clothes, watched a little TV and fussed over the procurement of bagels and the availability of coffee at 5 AM in Brooklyn.  Very important!

Everyone was all smiles as we headed to the start line the next morning!

Well, almost everyone.

I’ll spare you the details of the race for now – it was pretty ugly and deserves its own post – but suffice it to say that I was definitely glad to put those 13.1 miles behind me and get on to the important business of the post-race brunch/barbecue. (Thanks, Will and Kristan, for hosting!)

Sunburned, exhausted and desperately in need of a shower, I made my way back to Manhattan to chill with my friends H & J for the evening.  We did something amazing that you cannot do in North Carolina: we ordered delivery Thai food.

Roti roll with crispy duck. I would kill to have this brought to my doorstep in Raleigh.   I. Miss. New. York.

My awesome hosts had a fridge full of delicious beer and I happily sipped on a Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale:

This little guy was making bedroom eyes at me all night…

He and Emmy used to have play-dates when we lived in NYC!

I miss this cat.  I miss my friends.  I miss good pizza.  I miss delivery.  I even miss the crazy smelly people on the subway talking about the rapture.

Even though I only lived there for a year, I think NYC will always feel a little bit like home.

Sniff.

I guess I’ll go load the dishwasher and do some laundry.  And sit on my spacious balcony.  After a leisurely trip to Costco and Target.

It’s too bad I don’t have a lawn to mow.  Because the grass is always greener on the other side.

  1. Ugh I feel ya on the pizza. I am still trying to find satisfyingly good pizza down here. And I can get Thai delivered, but it’s not that good.

  2. I’ve never lived in NYC but I’ve visited there once and loved it! I want to come back soon!

  3. well the race might have sucked but it sounds like it was a great overall trip. slumber party? amazingness!!

  4. JEALOUS. I love visiting NYC, and don’t go nearly often enough. At the same time, I like the prospect of eventually being able to afford a house. With a lawn. Sometimes, that even beats the ability to have whatever type of food you want delivered to your door.

  5. I’m going to need to see picture of you guys sipping drinks through straws to know whether you truly had a good time or not.

  6. I enjoyed our walks and poop-talk.

  7. i hate nyc and love nc 🙂 but i understand the appeal. to other people.
have you tried lilly’s in raleigh? i forget if we talked about it but i definitely think it’s the best pizza around . . . not really nyc style but still awesome. however, i don’t even know if they deliver.

you’re so right that we need more delivery options around here!!
    but i still love it!

  8. I love the cat photo!
I hadn’t really thought about how many sweet take-out options there are in NYC. Do most places deliver? Is there an outrageous delivery charge in most cases? (I’m behind in the ways of take-out; I grew up in OH, we had literally one delivery option–pizza).

  9. 😦 I know what it’s like to miss a city that was home. It sucks!
Mmmm that Roti roll with crispy duck looks delicious.

Have you tried Piola in Raleigh/Chapel Hill. They have yummy Italian-style pizza. It’s not NYC style pizza, but it’s yummy. 🙂

  10. sad i missed you, but glad you enjoyed your time! love the duck faces and pizza action. nyc is tha bomb diggity, it’s true.

  11. That pizza looks so good! Sorry the race didn’t go as well as you wanted. Great duck face though!

  12. Sounds like a fun time back in NYC! I’m sure living there is really unlike anywhere else, so I don’t blame you for being homesick for it.
All that food looks amazing. A drawback of my area too is the lack of cuisine (and delivery) options!

  13. NYC misses you too!!! I wish we could have pizza-sleepovers and long runs (maybe without the racing part) and beer drinking all the time 😦

Can’t wait to see you in July!

  14. Is it sad that I want to visit NY just for the pizza? I wish we had delivery roti in NC. Then again, I might abuse it a wee bit too much. I look forward to hearing about the race.

  15. That pizza looks delicious! I think I know what I’m having for dinner tonight!

  16. Cat photos and pizza! Looks like a perfect trip! I read someone else’s race report on the Brooklyn Half and it sounds like the weather was just ridiculous, so I’m not surprised you’re glad it’s behind you. Interested to hear what you have to say about it regardless.

  17. Yum, that Thai food looks amazing. So does the pizza. Shoot, now I’m hungry. Glad you got through the race!
